From the Sala...

A sala is an open aired pavillion used as a meeting place or a place to protect from the sun and rain. These are very common around Thailand, and are often used as a place of rest. Sala in Thai: ศาลา

Tops Market: The Best in Fresh

Sunday, September 23, 2007

Our local chain of grocery stores here in town is called Tops Market. They are typically located in the bottom of a mall, however a new location just opened up literally 3 1/2 minutes from our house (seriously, we clocked it in the car!) and it's freestanding! That is really unheard of here. (See Wendy's latest post for the events leading up to the opening!) It is actually called "Tops International Market" so naturally we got really excited to go and see what products they might have that no one else here has.

The store has a whole new look and feel, and will definitely be my store of choice from now on! It was SO awesome! Very clean and spacious. There were products from all different countries like Japan, England, America, China, Australia, Thailand (go figure!) and that's just to name a few. In the meat section, they had frozen ostrich, octopus, squid, crocodile, butterball turkeys (yes!) and black chicken (no!). They had a great fresh produce section with beautifully displayed fruits and veggies (or weggies as they say here). Also had a great deli and cheese section which is also rare. We walked each and every aisle looking at all of the new things. I snapped a couple of photos of things were were really pumped about!

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups

Goldfish (Original, Cheddar, & Parmesan flavors)

So, we got some goldfish and the rest of the "normal" items on our list (bread, milk...), pushed our cart right out to the small parking lot, and were home 3 1/2 minutes later to unload. It was amazingly convenient and very exciting to know that we can run up there whenever we need to now. I think I'll go have a few goldfish right now...

I'll take a butterball turkey, some Reese's and those goldfish too. A plain diet coke without lemon would hit the spot. Kudos on your new grocery store. We just got a new one too, but it was...lacking.

How exciting! Yeah! Nothing like a cold reece's cup to make your day in Hot Thailand!!!! So happy for you guys! It's a miracle! I remember when we were living there we special ordered a Butterball turkey from the states for Thanksgiving...and paid $50 for a small one just so that we could have a "real" thanksgiving! And then the dog got that carcas and ate all of our leftovers!!!!!!! No Turkey sandwhiches!!! Enjoy! Love you!
